Our history!

We are a volunteer market, run and organised solely by a committee of volunteers since 1982 when the markets began. Our aim is to provide a great local market as a service to our community. All funds raised are returned to needy organisations and people in the local and Sydney area.

We are always looking for new members, if interested in volunteering on the day or to help run the market behind the scenes, email us, we would love to hear from you! Email:cobbittymarkets@gmail.com.au

The market is in the grounds of Cobbitty Public School, with lovely shade trees, some covered walkways, and the delightful country atmosphere of Cobbitty town. Off-street parking is available behind the market, and there is local and professional entertainment.

Want to know more about the history of Cobbitty Markets?

Cobbitty Markets started in May 1982 with about 10 stallholders serving customers in the grounds of St Paul’s Anglican Church. In 1987 the market moved to Cobbitty school. Over that time 12 stallholders have continued to serve the markets for over 25 years with 5 of those serving for 30 years! At a special 30 Year Anniversary afternoon tea in May 2012 the Committee presented these stallholders with a certificate of appreciation and memento for such dedicated service to Cobbitty Markets.

Over the years many service groups have continued to offer their services to the market including 1st Local Scout Groups (Devonshire tea & rubbish disposal), St John’s Ambulance (first aid assistance), Macarthur Lions Club (parking), Cobbitty Public School Hot Food Committee (BBQ every other month) and Narellan Rural Fire Brigade (parking). Each of these service groups were also acknowledged at our recent celebrations.

The market has always been run by volunteers and is a not for-profit organisation. There is an on-going commitment to provide a place for people to sell their own high quality crafts, goods and produce as well as providing a place where the community can come and enjoy a great day out relaxing with a cuppa or being entertained. There is truly a great vibe at the market and so many people, stallholders and customers alike, comment on how much they enjoy the market and appreciate its commitment to high quality goods over so many years.

In addition, Cobbitty Markets has continued its original goal of community fund-raising, with almost $700,000 raised over the 30 years! This money has been distributed to a variety of worthy causes, including:

  • large organisations such as Guide Dogs, Telstra Childflight, Careflight, MS
  • local families in need due to illness, death, or financial hardship
  • local community groups such as schools, fire brigades, retirement homes, and a variety of other groups.
